Well yes and no FIona, Figs seem to survive quite happily round here without
being buried. Admittedley I'm not as far north as you (I'm assuming you're in
Fife) but they're fairly common round here, IIRC mentioned in Richard Mabey's
Flora Brittanica even.
https://goo.gl/maps/VYaY2M51kdWajZzA8 is a link to a decent one in Rotherham
by the River Don. And here's another not far from my house by the River
Sheaf: https://goo.gl/maps/Lkx2Kr6HQu6nQJzCA. This was actually cut down by
the EA a few years ago, but it's growing back quite happily.
BUt I never knew anybody went so far as burying them.
Bill.

Hi Bill,
You must be the only other person I know who has also read this book -
I enjoyed it very much, definitely worth a read and trying to bury a fig!

Not sure what the Masons might get up to with Olive trees but I've
recently been reading a book entitled "the Island of Missing Trees,"
which was not at all what I was expecting. Elif Shafak wrote it with
the narrator being a cutting from a Fig tree that was killed in the
1974 Greek/Turk Cyprus confrontation.
Anyway I'd never heard of Fig trees being buried but apparently they are:

Strange book, covering a topic about which I know nothing, but I have
to say I enjoyed it. Some of you might as well.
Bill.
