Some of the ancient ones must have survied the occasional big freeze,
like Mark says I think it's unseasonal cold snaps in early spring that
get them. Apparently Siberian larch is also too tender for the UK climate.
Our olive in balmy Hertfordshire is doing OK but seemed very shade intolarant at first. The first year near a 1.8m fence it started getting very one sided. Moving it a bit and turning it round didn't help, now its farther from the fence a bit taller and doing fine.
Costco in Watford was selling big ones in pots. A quick look online for more info turned this up:
