As Mark says, they can thrive mightily and the problem of Victorian era trees
becoming far too big for their sites is both widespread and serious, and
looking at huge Planes in London I’m certainly at a loss as to how you go
about replacing them.

They grow very fast and very big along the south coast. I suspect, far bigger
than the people who planted them ever expected them to be. Many of them a
reaching an age where they become less reliable, usually large limb shedding
is the problem.

That neighbourhood's well-known for tree disputes Wayne. Most expensive
properties in the UK I believe. Only one mention of "amenity" in the article.
Looks like a tree in a position that many people would have found oppressive.
I'm not particularly familiar with the species (Pinus radiata) but we planted
some alongside our drive, after an elderly friend coaxed the seed out of some
cones in his oven. Out of the dozen or so transplants we planted and then
became reasonably established, only a couple survive now.
I don't know how well they thrive down on the south coast.
Bill.
