Moving to the continental plain has proven to be an eye opener with regards
the mycorrhizal relationship with trees, the limitations on trees via the
hydration aspect do not exist in the U.K, but here, trees need their fungi
so much that great investments are made in encouraging them, and indeed
this is proven, for nowhere have I ever experienced such
flamboyant displays as I do here in the periodically dry and stressful
Balkan ranges. So stark is the contrast I actually laugh at how naive I was
prior to coming here.

I learned very little about the Mycos in the U.k, they were elusive, here,
suffice to say they make up an enormous contribution to the forage and
economy, as they do in much of continental europe. Neville Fay once said to
me I should investigate Europe, Ive never forgotten those words and know
why he said them, and he was right for so many reasons I see now it makes
me smile, so if your listening Nev, Blagodarya, you was bang on!

Trees will recruit, they will even marginalize them if they need them not,
sometimes it can be a grey area between wether the tree is the parasite or
the mycelium, and it is not a case of one is dominant over the other, it is
always mutualistic, at least until one party finds they are up against it,
and even then that is only short term. it is a fascinating subject, one I
hope I will never feel I have a full grasp of. For that subject would lose
its charm.
